Princeton Arts Society Portrait Group “FACES” Exhibit

Worcester, Massachusetts Briarwood Retirement Community hosted a private opening reception for artists of the Princeton Arts Society Portrait Group on Sunday, January 5. The exhibit entitled “FACES” was the first of six to be scheduled in The Gallery at Briarwood in the coming year. The next exhibit will be presented in March by a member of Briarwood’s Board of Directors, Sharon Smith-Viles and the Silk Road Art Guild of Central Massachusetts. A complete schedule for the year will be released at a later date.

The Gallery at Briarwood was the brainchild of the weekly “Art with Merry” class held at Briarwood. “One day the class suggested they have an exhibit. We walked down the hall and kept walking,” laughs Briarwood resident and class instructor Marilyn “Merry” Pratt. “The light bulb went off. We realized it was the perfect space for an art gallery. Residents from the entire campus exhibited their works October through December 2013. It was then we realized we had something very special for the community.”

“FACES” was presented to showcase the caliber of work that is produced from weekly portrait sittings at the Princeton Center, 18 Boylston Ave. in Princeton. The mission of the Princeton Arts Society is to foster interest in the arts and to promote the talents and skills of its members.

The Portrait Group meets year round on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and has a live model who sits for twenty-minute segments during that time. The group has a long history of portrait making. It is led by founding members Merry Pratt and Jean Murphy.

PAS member Sid Solomon is having a really big show at the Sprinkler Factory Gallery. “Sid Solomon, The First 80 Years” will be on display at 38 Harlow Street, Worcester from February 1 to 28, 2014. The many faces of Dr. Sid will be revealed in over 100 artworks—oils, watercolors, pastels, drawings, sculpture, lightboxes and sumi-e paintings. The show will be open for viewing on Saturdays from 1 to 4 pm, or by appointment. Opening reception at the gallery on Friday, February 7 from 6 to 9 pm (snow date Saturday, February 8 from 6-9 pm). This exhibit is made possible by the Worcester Arts Council, a local Cultural Council supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. PAS member Stephanie Chubbuck has been awarded a $1,325 Material Needs Grant from ArtsWorcester for glass-blowing materials and equipment rental to create large-scale, hyper-realistic glass sculptures of fruit. ArtsWorcester’s Material Needs Grants for 2014-15 totaled $7,500, and support the supplies and equipment needed to create new art in Worcester County. Congratulations, Stephanie!!

New Additions to the PAS Art Library
Len Haug reports that thanks to recent donations by PAS member Barry Van Dusen, the following books have been added to our collection and are available for loan to our membership:
• Books on the lives and works of artists Kollwitz, Magritte, Matisse, Sargent, and Vermeer
• Books on techniques including "Creative Color for the Oil Painter", "The Painter's Craft", and "Oil Painting"

The Princeton Arts Society will be featuring Pearl Jam Twenty for this year's Movie Night 

Wednesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m.

This is a documentary featured on the public television series American Masters

on the evolution of this rock band over the past twenty years.

9th Annual Community Arts Festival

March 13, 2014

Please join us as a participating artist at the Ninth Annual Community Arts Festival, Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Thomas Prince School in Princeton. We welcome all community artists: they set a great example for students of lifelong creativity and commitment to the arts. This year our theme is Nature, although artists need not bring work that relates to the theme.

We’ll provide table or floor space for whatever work you would like to display. Please plan to arrive by 4:30 and be available to talk about your work between 5:30 and 7:30 pm. You are also free to offer your work for sale if you like.

Award-winning Local Poet to Read

Poet and Princeton native Jamie Samdahl will read from her new manuscript, Learned Exile¸ on Sunday, January 19 at 2 pm in the Princeton Arts Society’s room in the Princeton Center, 18 Boylston Ave. Jamie is a junior at Smith College in Northampton, and has just returned from three months of study and travel in India. Her poems have been published in Smith’s literary magazine Labrys, as well as in the five-college literary journal Quick Brown Fox.  In the spring of 2013 Jamie was named winner of Smith College Art Museum’s Tryon Prize for Writing, as well as Mount Holyoke College’s 90^th annual Glascock Poetry Prize. The reading is made possible in part by a grant from the Princeton Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. All are welcome!
